Planned route
We want to drive from South Africa, through Lesotho and Swaziland, to Mozambique.
From there follow the coast to Tanzania on to Kenya, over Lake Victoria in Uganda,
Rwanda, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia and to finish back in South Africa.
Things have just happened to work out that we will be doing our journey through
the Summer months so we decided to do Mozambique first as we can swim in the sea
and cool off. Not a difficult decision really: driving through the Namib desert
in the middle of summer or being able to go to a lovely beach and swim in the sea
in the Summer...
After all the drama we had shipping the car to South Africa, we are now planning
on leaving from Knysna at the end of January 2010. We are in the final stages of
preparation. After talking to a lot of people we are planning on driving East along
the coast of South Africa towards Port Elizabeth and East London. This is the Garden
Route and the old Ciskei/Transkei coastlines. The drive is breathtaking and the
roads generally good. We've been told we should be OK if we don't venture inland
in this area where the roads can get quite bad. We will then turn North towards
Bloemfontein – we have family there we can visit. Then we can head East and drive
through Lesotho to pop out at the Sani pass – some exciting 4x4-ing should be had
here. Then we will aim for the coast again and drive North through Swaziland and
head for Mozambique. Another option at this stage is to drive through parts of the
Kruger National Park and enter Mozambique that way. We have been told that smaller
border posts can get funny and say you have to exit at the same Border gate you
enter at. Which won't suit our plans at all. Another point to research before we
get there, otherwise it is a long detour.
But have a read of our sections on “Countries visited” as we will be updating these
pages with our actual journey as we go along.
